Was it Jackie Brenston with "Rocket 88" (#2 in 1951)
or was it Roy Brown with "Good Rockin' Tonight" in 1947?
I've got to go with Brenston. Elvis does his own version of "Good Rockin' Tonight here.

...if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people -- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties -- someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal." Alan Freed coined the term Rock & Roll some time after "The Moondog House" aired on Cleveland late nite radio, July 11, 1951.
As good an R&R single as Brenston's 'Rocket 88' is, it came out in March of that year before Rock and Roll existed.
But, if I had to pick a song and the artist, it is Mr. Roy Brown.
