Pictures of the bog taken from the 900 ft long boardwalk across the bog.

This isn't the bog, it's a picture of the pond.

Saranac Lake - First Snow Big Does

About an inch of snow in my yard this morning although other areas are reporting up to 3 inches. It's the first significant snowfall of the year.

Earlier in the day my yard was visited by some huge whitetail does. These animals look like they are ready for winter.

Neighborhood Color

It's past peak color but still nice. Unfortunately, it is raining very hard right now. I expect many of these leaves are being knocked off the trees as I type.

Sunday was the first frost and first sighting of snow flurries at my house. Snow actually accumulated on top of Whiteface Mt.

Saranac River in Saranac Lake Village

The water level in the river is as low as it has probably ever been. There is usually a foot of water going over the dam. Check out the dam pictures, the water is probably down at least 18 inches.

Bouldering on McKenzie Pond Rd.

There are a bunch of glacial erratic boulders off McKenzie Pond Rd. that seem to excite rock climbers. Photos of people scaling these boulders can be found here. There are usually quite a few cars parked on the side of the road. Some travel hundreds of miles to climb these boulders. Good thing they don't know where the really good boulders are located.

Lake Placid

The lake you see in the middle of the village of Lake Placid is not Lake Placid, it's Mirror Lake. Lake Placid is a five mile long lake that is not easily seen from the village. Well, I guess you can go to the state boat launch. Better views of the lake require a short hike. These pictures were taken from the Lakeshore trail on the peninsula.

Oseetah Lake - Another Short Hike in Saranac Lake

You can see Oseetah Lake (called Miller Pond by the locals) even if you don't have a boat. The trail that leads to the lake begins at the parking lot where the railroad tracks cross the road just outside of Saranac Lake before you get to Ray Brook. Where the vegetable stands are in the summer. The trail is wide, flat and root free and takes you through a majestic pine forest. The walk in to the lake takes about 15 min. Caution, there are several trails in these woods, but stay on the wide main trail and you will make it to Oseetah Lake in no time. Buy some fresh vegetables before you drive away.

Middle Saranac Lake, NY - The Beach

This is a little known beach, at least to tourists. It's a big beach (over 800 steps long). Nice sand, shallow water, good for kids. No facilities and no life guards. It belongs to the taxpayers of NY state. The water level is extremely low due to the lack of rain this summer.
