Interesting ADK Poll

Question: Which presidential candidate do you favor for the Feb. 5 primary election?

Hillary Clinton 24.2%

John Edwards 7.1%

Rudy Giuliani 5.1%

Mike Huckabee 3.0%

Alan Keyes 1.9%

John McCain 14.5%

Barack Obama 27.5%

Ron Paul 1.9%

Mitt Romney 8.6%

Undecided 6.3%

Now everyone knows these kinds of polls are not scientific at all. But the Tri-Lakes area always comes across as a pretty conservative area. So where did all these votes for Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama come from? Is it because more progressives read the ADE online and participate in the polls? Is it because of those commie liberals in Long Lake? Is it from votes from the America hating "outsiders"?

Do read the comments on this poll. You find very few comments explaining suppor for republican candidates. Why is that? Are they just too embarassing to talk about?

Hunter, Bush, Me and Columbia University

G.W. Bush guesses it's ok with him that Ahmadinejad got to speak at Columbia University. Wow, for once I agree with G.W. See, G.W. and I both think that Americans (Mericans for Bush) are confident enough to let Ahmadinejad express his views.

Leave it to Presidential candidate Duncan Hunter to disagree with me and Pres. Bush. Hunter thinks all federal funding should be taken away from Columbia University. Rep. Hunter thinks it's the governments responsibility to determine who should get to speak in the USA and who should not. Rep. Hunter hates the Constitution of the USA, especially the 1st amendment. Unless it has to do with putting up a copy of the Ten Commandments all over the USA.

Habeas Corpus Vote Fails

Forty-six Republican senators have voted against restoring the constitutional right of Habeas Corpus in the USA.
The amendment was sponsored by Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, Senator Arlen Specter, who voted for the legislation that the amendment attempts to reverse, and Senator Chris Dodd, who blasted today's vote. "Each of us in the Senate faced a decision either to cast a vote in favor of helping to restore America's reputation in the world, or to help dig deeper the hole of utter disrespect for the rule of law that the Bush Administration has created. Unfortunately, too many of my colleagues chose the latter," he said.
These forty-six Senators have either a) not read the Constitution of the USA; b) think the USA is being invaded; c) think there is a rebellion in the USA; d) hate America.

I sure would love to hear some conservative opinion on why our right of Habeas Corpus should be suspended.

How Did the US Middle Class Arise?

Paul Krugman of the NYT has a blog now. Today he talks about the rise and fall of the middle class in the USA.

Michael Mukasey for Attorney General?

It's being reported (and here for conservatives) that Pres. Bush may nominate Michael Mukasey for Attorney General. Mukasey is a hard line conservative but believes in the rule of law. Mukasey is a retired former U.S. Southern district judge from New York. Judge Mukasey has one thing going against him however. Conservatives have some problems with him.

Here is the main reason conservatives will be wary of confirming Judge Mukasey as AG:
Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., previously recommended Mukasey for a Supreme Court vacancy.
That's not to say that Mukasey will be an easy confirmation by Democrats either. I'm pretty sure he will be asked some tough questions.

UPDATE: As expected, the conservatives are beginning to whine.

US National Debt

The US national debt is now over $9 trillion, about $29,000 for every man, women and child in the US. In 2000 the debt was $5.7 trillion. You can follow the monthly increase in the national debt since Jan. 2001 here (you need to enter the dates).

A significant portion (although less than I thought) of that debt is held by foreign countries. About $1.6 or so trillion. Still that's a lot of money. About 3 times the direct cost of our current wars.

Lots of facts about the national debt can be found here at the Concord Coalition and here at National Debt Clock.
