Excuses for Slavery or Give Slavery a Break

This is rich. Michael Medved tells us the truth about slavery at townhall.com.

1. SLAVERY WAS AN ANCIENT AND UNIVERSAL INSTITUTION, NOT A DISTINCTIVELY AMERICAN INNOVATION. [others were doing it so why couldn't we]

2. SLAVERY EXISTED ONLY BRIEFLY, AND IN LIMITED LOCALES, IN THE HISTORY OF THE REPUBLIC – INVOLVING ONLY A TINY PERCENTAGE OF THE ANCESTORS OF TODAY’S AMERICANS. [heck, we only had 89 years of slavery, what are you whining about?]

3. THOUGH BRUTAL, SLAVERY WASN’T GENOCIDAL: LIVE SLAVES WERE VALUABLE BUT DEAD CAPTIVES BROUGHT NO PROFIT. [lets not count all those that died on slave ships]

4. IT’S NOT TRUE THAT THE U.S. BECAME A WEALTHY NATION THROUGH THE ABUSE OF SLAVE LABOR: THE MOST PROSPEROUS STATES IN THE COUNTRY WERE THOSE THAT FIRST FREED THEIR SLAVES. [that sure excuses slavery]

5. WHILE AMERICA DESERVES NO UNIQUE BLAME FOR THE EXISTENCE OF SLAVERY, THE UNITED STATES MERITS SPECIAL CREDIT FOR ITS RAPID ABOLITION. [yeah, we got rid of it didn't we?]

6. THERE IS NO REASON TO BELIEVE THAT TODAY’S AFRICAN-AMERICANS WOULD BE BETTER OFF IF THEIR ANCESTORS HAD REMAINED BEHIND IN AFRICA. [yeah, blacks should be paying US for bringing their ancesters to the USA]
Damn! And Republicans just can't understand why they don't get more of the black vote.

My head hurts.

The US abolished slavery something like 30 years after the UK did for one thing. And nationwide abolition was only done as a tactic to help win the Civil War. Lincoln would have accepted slavery to preserve the union.

"THE MOST PROSPEROUS STATES IN THE COUNTRY WERE THOSE THAT FIRST FREED THEIR SLAVES."

Then why did the southern states preserve a system that put them at an economic disadvantage? How could you not benefit from an agricultural system where you paid your primary employees nothing?

Besides, China's sure gotten ahead with a large dose of slave labor.
